AK-47 Coffee Table

At Outta Timber, my background in CNC machining goes back 14 years, starting on DOS-based systems where every toolpath was written as X, Y, and Z coordinates, and every single point was entered by hand. There was no way to preview what would happen — a program could take a whole day to complete, and the only way to carve any deeper was to go back and repeat the coordinates all over again. As CNC technology evolved, I progressed into modern CAD/CAM programming and advanced machining techniques, building on those early foundations while continually expanding my skills.

Wanting to challenge myself beyond conventional machining, I started creating custom stands and display cut-outs before pushing further into 3D CNC carving. Each project I take on at Outta Timber is a chance to apply everything I've learned over the years, combining technical machining knowledge with creativity and craftsmanship.

The AK-47 Coffee Table was one of those challenges. Knowing that timber and resin makers often incorporate spent ammunition into their work, I wanted to take the concept much further by carving a fully detailed semi-automatic rifle directly into the tabletop itself. Inspired by years of playing first-person shooter games — Counter-Strike, followed by Battlefield — and fascinated by the iconic design of the AK-47, I used this project to show what could be achieved through CNC carving alone, rather than simply assembling decorative elements.

Finding the right timber mattered just as much as the design. I selected Camphor Laurel for its striking grain, natural character, and warmth, letting the carving stand out while complementing the resin. I wanted the piece to be as lifelike as possible, so real spent bullet casings were carefully embedded in crystal clear resin — right down to fine detail you can pick out in the butt stock if you look closely — adding realism and reinforcing the theme without overshadowing the beauty of the timber.

This project represents more than a coffee table. It's a showcase of decades of CNC programming experience — from early DOS-based machines through to modern CNC machining and 3D carving — combined with my passion at Outta Timber for transforming timber into detailed, one-of-a-kind functional art.

Flower Power Coffee Table

This piece started with a scroll through TikTok. I kept seeing artists rolling and folding coloured paper into small blocks, then spinning them on a lathe to carve vases and decorative pieces — the layers creating these intricate repeating patterns as they turned. It stuck with me — what if that technique wasn't just decorative, but load-bearing, functional, full-scale?

The result is the Flower Power Coffee Table: 750 sheets of layered paper, CNC-carved into an intricate floral pattern, then covered in crystal-clear resin. The carving gives the design real depth — the layers show through almost like timber grain, with colour running through rather than sitting flat on the surface.

It suits boutique flower shops, cafés, modern offices, or as a centerpiece at home.
